Our History

Golden Lane has a rich and varied history  Conceived in 1962 by Mr.AhmedSabiq, the Golden Lane Group has gone on to grow very successful businesses in sectors ranging from Foods & beverages, Furniture’s, Sports & casual Shoes, Kids items, consumer electrical, Luggage, Bicycle, resorts, and property development.

Once a Golden Lane is up and running, several factors contribute to making it a success. The power of the Golden Lane name;  reputation had built on past fifty years; our unrivalled network of friends, contacts and partners; the Golden Lane management style; the way talent is empowered to flourish within the group, Golden Lane has minimal management layers, no bureaucracy, a tiny board, but it works for us! The proof of our success is real and tangible. Our companies are part of a family rather than a hierarchy. They are empowered to run their own affairs, yet the companies help one another, and solutions to problems often come from within the Group somewhere.

GOLDEN LANE was the story of my life - how it was started and what made it successful and it is my wish and continued hope that all Directors, Executives and staffs continue to keep that endeavor with confidence in their career and life either with or without the company. It was trust and my performance-proven commitment in my work with NAFI that facilitated me with the opportunity to involve in procurement service to them. Yes, today it is a 'ran magu' for anyone who can display his or her commitments through competencies within the letter and spirit of the defined shared values of GOLDEN LANE.


1962    Ahmed Sabiq started procurement services to NAFI (Navy Air Force of British in Gan) at a personal level using sterling pounds as means of transactions. All purchases were made from abroad and cloths were the main product that was traded.


1969    Vanila Store was opened in Gan to cater the domestic market and main products were biscuits, corrugated sheets, post cards, cigarettes, etc.


1976    Giniraahi Store was opened in Male’ in partnership with Mr. Hussain Mohamed (HussainRahaa) and he was one of the first people who visited Singapore for business.  Although, I started Giniraahi Store in Male’ through this partnership, I stayed in Addu and involved in the development of Vanila Store businesses.


1978    As business in Male’ became more prospective, came to Male and bought a fishing dhoani and installed Marine Engine to operate fishing dhoni businesses effectively.


1988    Hired MajeedheeMagu No: 72 two store building and started retail business of clothes, cosmetics and ready-made-garments under the name AS Textiles. All purchase requirements to the Sales Outlet were made from Singapore. During this time, all purchases were made after personally choosing from the Singapore market and paying in advance before the arrival of goods to Male.’


1990    Rented another two-store building and opened under the name Fashion Paradise in retailing of clothes, cosmetics, ready-made-garments, shoes products for the Male’ market.


1991
    Hired another Sales Outlet located at Athama Palace and named it as “Starlight”dealing in ready garments covering a comprehensive range of product line for both men and women for all ages.


1992    Opened Golden Lane 1 and this Sales Outlet focused on retailing of footwear and sports items.


1993    Opened Diplomat and this Sales Outlet deals with full range of bicycles complete with spare parts.


1994    Golden Lane 2 was opened. This Sales Outlet deals with full range of footwear items for men and women.


1995    Parkway 1 was opened. This Sales Outlet provides full range of furniture including home and office furniture.


1997    Parkway 2 was opened. This Sales Outlet too deals with furniture products.
GL Electronics was opened. This Sales Outlet which covers household electrical and electronic items complete with accessories and equipments.


1998    GL Shop was opened. This Sales Outlet deals with full range of luggage and traveling bags for all occasions.


2004    Restructured and streamlined the whole Sales Outlets. Since, then sales management of GOLDEN LANE was carried out through the 09 Sales Outlets as now.


2008    Development of planned corporate culture providing action guidelines for employees and customer services while satisfactorily meeting the contemporary management and marketing concepts. Today, GOLDEN LANE is a more matured learner challenging in today’s competitive world with a clear vision, mission and shared values that makes up the fundamentals of the company.
